The U.S. Surgeon General released a new advisory, January 3, 2025, outlining the direct link between alcohol and an increased risk of cancer. Alcohol consumption is now in the top three leading causes of preventable cancer after tabaco and obesity. Scientific evidence collected over the last four decades has led to this new discovery. There are seven types of cancer directly linked to alcohol consumption. Risk of cancer begins to increase after just one to two drinks daily. This consumption in addition to biological, environmental, social and economic factors increase the overall risk of cancer.

Do you know how to identify the signs of addiction? Signs to look for include drinking beyond one’s limit despite wanting to, craving or feeling the urge to drink, and failing to meet your obligations at work, home or school. Additional symptoms may include using alcohol in unhealthy ways such as drinking and driving, while at work, or developing a tolerance so you need to drink more to feel its effects. Withdrawal symptoms will include nausea, sweating, and shaking.

Being able to recognize the signs of alcohol addiction, can not only reduce or eliminate the risk of cancer, but it can also save a life. We are here to help you find resources in your area. Check out this Lunch and Learn webinar for more information on addiction and substance abuse.
