Having and maintaining healthy relationships are beneficial for one’s mental and emotional well-being. Why is that? A recent study from the National Institutes of Health found that positive relationships give us a sense of purpose, decreases risk of diseases, leads to a longer lifespan, and is crucial for enhancing mental health. Positive relationship do not have to be romantic in nature. Positive mental health benefits can also come from familial, platonic, or social relationships.
Physical touch in a relationship helps lower anxiety, reduce stress, depression, and increases the immune system. Did you know that giving someone a hug can actually lower cortisol levels and even reduce one’s blood pressure? The simple act of comforting a child, hugging a friend, or holding a loved one’s hands can have multiple mental health benefits.
Healthy positive relationships also contribute to one’s emotional well-being. Individuals who have good social connections with those around them find a sense of purpose that bonds them through shared activities. It creates a sense of belonging, offers guidance and stability, and makes life more enjoyable. Healthy relationships are a great source of love, joy, and a community in which their mental health can thrive. How do your positive relationships affect your mental health?
