A TIME TO TALK: BREAKING THE STIGMA ON MENTAL HEALTH
Have you ever heard there are certain topics you talk about in public? This notion has led to a stigma over certain topics, such as mental health, that needs to be normalized if we are ever going to break the stigma and raise awareness. Suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death among 15 – 35-year-olds. For every death caused by suicide, there are many more suicide attempts that did not lead to death.
How can we work together to break the stigma? Let’s talk mental health. Create time to talk to those around you and check in on their emotional well-being. Maybe that means taking the first step and asking someone to listen to you express your current struggles. This can make all the difference in your social circle. We all need a safe place to talk it out. Challenge yourself to break the stigma on mental health and encourage, support, and listen to a friend this month.
A Time to Talk by Robert Frost
When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, What is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.
